Korean construction giant vows to go ‘AI native’ by 2028

South Korean’s Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction (E&C) has set out an official roadmap for how it plans to become an “AI native” construction company.

The company’s vision involves all workflows and decision-making processes being driven by artificial intelligence.

At its 2025 AI Day, held at its Seoul headquarters, the company introduced several new AI innovations, including three AI agent projects that it has co-developed with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

More than 400 people attended the event, including president and CEO Se-chul Oh, senior leadership, AI specialists across the organization, and partners from AWS.

The three AI projects that Samsung has been developing with AWS are:

  • AI-ITB Reviewer: Automatically analyses large volumes of bid documents to identify potential risks quickly
  • AI-Contract Manager: Supports legal and contractual decision-making by detecting risk factors and providing specialised guidance
  • AI-Project Expert (AIPEX): Integrates and analyses scattered on-site data to uncover hidden insights and support project management

The company said it would start to apply AI-ITB Reviewer and other AI agents across all new construction projects starting next year.

Over the next three years, the company will implement a phased approach to AI transformation with the goal of enabling AI-centered intelligent workflows across the entire construction business by 2028.

Byungsik So, executive vice president and head of ENG innovation, noted that there is currently a gap between personal AI use and low adoption in professional workflows, which he said presented strategic opportunities for the business.

He identified three core pillars of AI innovation at Samsung C&T:

  • Knowledge accumulation: Developing AI based on the group’s unique data, insights, and expertise
  • Active intelligence: Moving beyond passive responses to AI that asks questions and makes proactive suggestions
  • Shift in perspective: Evaluating AI not by external benchmarks but by its ability to solve Samsung C&T’s business challenges

Speaking at the event, AWS enterprise lead Yoonsik Kim praised noted that leading global companies are no longer focused solely on AI performance itself but on how AI is integrated with their internal data, workflows, and security systems. He described Samsung C&T’s three AI agent projects as model examples of effective AI adoption.
